Monks in Action

In warm weather, Abbot Barnabas Senecal, the eighth abbot of St. Benedict’s Abbot, can often be found pulling weeds, trimming hedges and mowing grass. Not one to shy away from work, he travels the Archdiocese on behalf of the Archbishop celebrating confirmations and has become beloved for the warmth of his presence and singing voice as young people accept the rights and responsibilities of their Catholic faith.

Brother Joe's Quest

In his 17 years as a monk he has crawled inside walls, scrambled over roofs, slid down chimneys, and scampered through attics.

He’s back at it again. Armed with a tape measure, a camera, and the curiosity of a man who pursued degrees in physics and astronomy, he is now doing the work of an architect.
Brother Joe has made it his personal quest since he came to the Abbey to make his home more energy efficient. Led by his efforts, the monks have largely succeeded, cutting their energy use from 6 million cubic feet of gas to 4 million.

The monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey are grateful for you. Each day we gather to lift the world to God in prayer and you and all of the friends who support us in this monastic life that we have embarked on for more than 150 years is remembered in our hearts and on our lips.

Hopefully you have come to this Web page because you are curious about the Share Our Mission capital campaign.

Our monastery is looking the future with hope. We currently have six young men in formation. Three new novices, three young men in simple vows working toward the day they will profess lifetime vows. Our Brother Leven Harton of peanut brittle fame has recently professed solemn vows, and Father Jeremy Heppler, newly ordained, is a popular teacher and chaplain at Maur Hill-Mount Academy.  Moving forward hope means providing a home worthy of such enthusiasm and commitment.

Blessings from the Journey Forward

Written by Dan Madden

In 2007, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of our community, the monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey and their friends and benefactors completed an important project in the spirit of Benedictine hospitality—the Journey Forward accessibility project.

At the urging of Abbot Barnabas Senecal, the community made the commitment to follow the tenets of our patron, St. Benedict, to accept all visitors as Christ—especially those with disabilities—and bring our church up to modern accessibility standards in time to celebrate the sesquicentennial. This was no easy task; however, the Journey Forward campaign was a great success.
